| Cat. no. AS-02 ARACONS are seed harvesting devices that automatically
collect seeds produced by individual Arabidopsis plants. ARACONS consist of two parts, a
base and tube. The assembled ARACON is 44.45 cm (17.5 in) tall and
has a diameter of 5.56 cm (2.1875 in). Thus, if its legs
are inserted a distance of 2.54 cm (1 in) into growing medium,
the assembled ARACON would occupy about 41.91 cm (16.5 in) of vertical
space above the medium's surface.
The ARACON base is placed over the center of a
rosette whorl shortly after bolting has occurred. The clear plastic tube slips into the
base and provides a protected channel for the grow of the flowers and maturing siliques.
Any seeds which shatter from mature siliques are passively collected by the inverted cone
receiver of the base piece.
By virtue of their design, ARACONS prevent
cross-fertilization of flowers and cross-contamination of seeds of adjacent plants grown
in traditional pots. ARACONS also lower the risk of uncontrolled release of transgenic
seeds into the environment. (Note:
The tube portion of the Aracon is available separately as cat. no. AS-08 Aratubes. The Aracon bases are not sold separately and
must be obtained either in cat. no. AS-01 Starter Kit 360 or cat.
no. AS-02 Aracons.)
