One gram of seeds contains about 50,000 seeds. One decigram (0.1 gram) of seeds contains about 5,000 seeds.

Mutagenesis with gamma-ray irradiation from a Cobalt-60 source.

Mutagenesis with ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS). Seeds are typically imbibed in 0.13% to 0.25% EMS for up to 12.5 hours at 23 C. Specific conditions vary slightly from batch to batch. About 6,250 M1 parents are represented in each gram of M2 seeds, i.e. sampling frequency is about 8 M2 seeds per M1 parent. M2 progeny from M1 parents are bulked in individually numbered parental groups ranging from about 600 to 1,600 M1 parents each, so each gram of M2 seeds purchased will represent a different group of 6,250 M1 parents. All parental groups can be sampled repeatedly while supply lasts.
