Havana 38, alias Wisconsin 38, Wisconsin-38 and
W38. Havana 38 was developed at the University of Wisconsin
Agriculture Experiment Station at Madison from 1908-1915 from a cross
between distinct strains of the Connecticut Havana-Seed variety. (Johnson
J, Ogden WB (1939) Tobacco varieties & strains in Wisconsin, Univ. of
Wisconsin Ag. Exp. Sta. Bul. 448: 1-31). Once prized for binder-leaf
tobacco production in Wisconsin, its primary use today is for laboratory
plant tissue culture and transformation. Havana 38 is
TMV-susceptible (nn genotype) and black root rot-susceptible (caused by
the fungus Thielaviopsis basicola). |
